"Well looked after"

About: St George Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

My parent was sent to another hospital for suspected spinal injuries after a bad fall at home.

That hospital failed to find 2 fractures in my parent's pelvis (detected later at St George hospital) they were given an MRI and normal Xrays. No CT scan was done, despite their complaints of serious pain.

As days went on, I believe the doctors at the other hospital had not made plans to move my parent to an aged care ward. I believe they continued to give them pain medication and did not monitor their bowel movements.

I had previously asked a number of staff including a doctor to transfer my parent to the St George hospital. Nothing was organised in relation to this request.

My parent also developed very high potassium levels during their stay there.

On the 11th day after speaking to a doctor who said they would only monitor the prolapse and not offering any kind of explanation or treatment, I decided to discharge my parent from that hospital and drove them to St George hospital.

On arrival at St George hospital, the triage nurse asked me if I had taken my parent home for a few days. I replied no, I have come directly from another hospital. The nurse showed me the discharge papers, which had the wrong date!

I then explained what had happened.

They admitted my parent into emergency and started treating a constipation and prolapse. Since then, they have discovered 2 pelvic fractures after doing a CT scan. The dermatologist had to do a biopsy to treat the bad skin disorder. The diabetic medication has been adjusted accordingly and the high potassium has been treated. My parent is now in the aged care ward and being well looked after.
