"Remote neurology"

About: Karratha Health Campus / Outpatients & Day Treatment Patient Assisted Travel Scheme - WACHS Pilbara

(as the patient),

I have been having shakes whilst resting, driving or sitting in my left fore arm/hand. I attended my GP for their diagnosis. Their response was to order a CT scan to be carried out.

At the end of last year, I had a CT scan, the report outlined a cyst in the frontal lobe of approximately 12x10x8mm. It wasn't until I had represented to the GP inquiring as to the rest's and information regarding the Cyst, it was then the GP referred me to a Neurologist in Perth. An appointment was arranged for early one month this year, at which point I contacted PATS regarding transport, and I was informed it would be ok.

Early in that month I made contact with PATS and was informed as there was a visiting Neurologist they would not assist in transport to Perth for an appointment. Some days later I re-attended the GP to be referred to the visiting Neurologist, upon leaving the doctors surgery I attended the Out Patients desk at the Karratha Health Campus (previously known as Nickol Bay hospital), with referral in hand. I handed it to the attendant who informed me it had to be triaged and they would be in contact.

Later in the month I contacted the "out patient" desk and was informed that it was still waiting to be triaged. To call back next week, which I have done on the last day of the month, to which I was informed that the Senior Medical Director hadn't got to it yet.

The person I spoke to on the phone, referring to the pressure they were under, how they had other phone calls to attend to and, I felt, impatient demeanor raised my temper to a point I hung up.

Upon reclaiming my composure, I called again, and was answered by a different person, immediately apologizing on my loss of composure to which the response was far more comforting and compassionate. This person then proceeded to inform me that they personally would follow this up with the senior medical director and would be in touch soon.

I am unsure as to which way to turn, or escalate to retrieve answers and appropriate care.

Dear matarbz86,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience both with the Patient Assisted Travel Scheme (PATS) and the Karratha Health Campus.

I am sorry that your care has been delayed, our communication with you was not caring or helpful, and that you have still not yet received an appointment for your ongoing care. This is not the patient experience we aim to achieve at Karratha Health Campus. I would like to urgently follow up on your Outpatient appointment with the Neurologist to ensure there are no further delays to your care, and so ask you to please contact me. My name is Lisa Smith and I am the Operations Manager in the West Pilbara, which includes Karratha Health Campus. I can be contacted on Lisa.Smith3@health.wa.gov.au or 08 9144 7639.

I am also concerned to hear that a member of our team is experiencing workload pressures that is impacting on the care that they are able to provide. I have asked that our Administration manager to follow up with our clerical team to identify if further staff training or support is required, and to reiterate the recent customer service training that has been delivered in order to ensure that a similar experience does not reoccur.

As a result of some of the feedback we have received from the people who access our PATS services, we have planned some improvements to the way we process our PATS forms, by developing an online portal that gives patients the ability to submit their own PATS applications and keep track of their subsidy payments. This online portal once tested will be in place by 2022. If you would like further information on this, you can visit the PATS website http://www.wacountry.health.wa.gov.au/index.php?id=2906.

Thank you again for reaching out via Care Opinion, and I hope to hear from you shortly so that I can support you to access the care that you require.

Kind regards

Lisa Smith
