"Stitches Removal"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Renal Dialysis Unit, Renal Transplant Unit (Surgical and Medical)

(as the patient),

During a routine visit to FSH, I asked the dialysis nurse, twice, if they would mind checking the wound arising from a fistula being implanted.

The nurse expressed surprise at the fact there were still stitches in the wound and indicated they should have come out ages ago.

To my disgust, they proceeded to pick out the stitches using their fingernails. No gloves. No sanitisation.

Upon completion, they walked off, I believe picked a $2 from the floor and proceeded to attend to another patient.

Dear octoberjy45,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback.

I was sorry to learn of your experience and would like the opportunity to investigate the concerns you have raised.

The hospital has strict hand hygiene standards that all staff are required to adhere to. I was disappointed to learn that your experience didn’t align with the standards we have in place.

Please contact our Patient Family Liaison team on 6152 4013 to provide us with your patient details so we can investigate the care provided to you.

Yours sincerely,

Neil Doverty
