My toddler was required to return to PCH recently after an initial admittance a few weeks ago as a result of a dog bite to my child's face. I felt my child's treatment by the medical staff on both occasions was amazing - can’t speak highly enough of the nurses and plastics team.
In contrast, the triage desk on the return date were noted to question why my child was returning to the hospital to have their sutures removed. And, I believe, passed various comments behind my back which, I understand, my partner heard as they were sitting behind a pillar in the waiting area.
I understand one comment was that I was highly strung and querying why my child was being admitted just to get their stitches out. They then proceeded to look at my child's admittance document and then, I understand, further commented oh it’s a dog bite, I understand now why they're so highly strung. Obviously, I believe, this behaviour does not assist when you have been dealing with your toddler’s face being half bitten off by a dog. Further, we were following the PCH doctors / surgeons advice.
I had asked the triage desk if we could assist the hospital and case load by getting them removed privately on the day (as that stage only one theatre was open & my child's fasting period was now past 36 hours since they last ate) but that I didn’t know if this was an option. Apparently this was the query that lead them to label me as highly strung. Obviously, in my opinion, this behaviour is not appropriate, especially when one is dealing with high emotions already.
In any event - the back end nursing and doctors were amazing -but I would’ve thought the front of staff would be more professional and trained in how to communicate in an appropriate and compassionate way. In my opinion, front house really needs to have an attitude overhaul. Thank you.
