"Emergency department"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was recovering at home a couple of weeks post surgery on my leg in Perth, when I felt very sick. I had a fever with a really bad headache, body aches, chills etc... I rang my surgeon (based in Perth) as I was worried it was from the pain medication I was receiving.

They told me to get to the Kalgoorlie ED now to make sure it wasn't an infection to my wound. I arrived at the ED in the late afternoon and had to wait a couple of hours until I was seen.

Once in the ED room they checked me over, took bloods etc.. the ED team told me that they were likely going to admit me but wanted to wait for the medic team to assess me to make that decision. I spoke to the Medic team and they were happy to admit me but also happy to let me go home. I told them I would prefer to go home and could return if things got worse.

The ED team them came in later in the evening to tell me I was going to be admitted anyway. During this time I had to ask 3 times for Panadol to help with my headache before they finally brought me some. After that I was left in the ED room until after midnight before being taken to my room.

The room they left me in for several hours had plaster all through the bed from taking my cast off and re applying it and blood from the mess they made putting my drip in. The lights were fully lit and the machines kept blaring alarms every two seconds.

I felt so angry that I wanted to cry for being left in that room like that through the night feeling as sick as I did with no one checking on me. I believe I could have been at home asleep in my own bed getting the rest I needed. Instead I spent a sleepless night in an ED room.

I was in the ED department for a number of hours and majority of that time was me waiting to be treated or waiting to be taken to my room. After having surgery in Perth which was beyond exceptional I was really disappointed in the Kalgoorlie hospital.

Dear Shooter91,

I am sorry to hear about your disappointing experience while being treated at the Kalgoorlie Health Campus Emergency Department. I can only imagine the discomfort and distress you felt being made to wait in the Emergency Department until a bed on the admitting ward became available.

It is disappointing that you were unable to rest due to your unchanged bedding and the lights being left on in the ED treatment area.

We would really appreciate being able to speak with you to learn more about the details of what has happened, this will enable us to better understand and improve our patient’s journey in the ED.

If you are happy to discuss can you please contact Mr Scott Jones, who is the Operations Manager at the Kalgoorlie Campus. Scott can be contacted on 08 9080 5817 or via email at Scott.Jones2@health.wa.gov.au.

I truly thank you for your feedback, for this gives us important information to help us continually improve our patient care and ensure better patient experiences within our service.

I wish you well on your recovery and hope to hear from you soon.

Kind Regards,

Peter Tredinnick
