"Particular Doctor at the Hospital"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child was unwell for 3 days, and hitting 40-degree temps. Whilst walking recently, they had a funny turn and started shaking for a few moments and their legs went all shaky and they fell and couldn't stand up. So we headed up to the hospital just to get my child checked out and make sure it was just a viral thing and not something more sinister.

Turns out it wasn't. Just before we left Dr Thomas came in and went over everything with us, and put my mind at ease.

It's not so much this specific visit - but I've had Thomas help me previously with a super complicated history and an array of horrid medical issues that have plagued my life for the last 18 months.

I think he's just amazing. I hope he knows that. I hope you, as an employer, know that. I've developed such massive health anxiety over the time I've been sick because I've come across so many, who I believe are incompetent, egotistical doctors...who have failed me time and time again. But not him... he's always made sense when he talks and has made an effort to understand what's wrong with me and always seeks out the correct people to back him up when he isn't sure. It's just such a breath of fresh air to see someone who is good at their job and clearly likes their job... Most importantly, he has empathy. He listens and has a very calm presence.

I felt anxious and upset because I hate seeing my child sick. I hate being in Albany ED because of so many bad past experiences. Every time I need to go there I feel something in me is triggered and I hate it...but recently, when I saw and spoke to him I just felt calm. And trusted everything he was saying - which is so rare and such a hard thing to do for me since I've been unwell...

I just wanted to thank him for being a wonderful human. He exudes empathy and care and, in my opinion, you need to teach every other Dr who works there to be more like him.

Thank you.

Dear French87,

Thank you for your kind words about Dr Thomas. We have shared your story with him and the rest of the emergency department (ED) team.

I am glad to hear that your experience in ED is improving and we appreciate your suggestion that we teach all of our ED Doctors to be more like Dr Thomas. He is definitely a role model and he supports ED doctors across the great southern.

EDs are complex environments but we do our best to ensure that all our patients receive safe and quality healthcare. We hope that should you need to come to Albany ED again that you have a similar experience to this one.

Best wishes

Dr Will MacDonald

Director of Emergency Medicine.
