"Care for fractured thumb"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Kalgoorlie Outpatient Clinic

(as the patient),

A few weeks ago, I fell at my back step that goes down onto the lawn. I fractured the base of my thumb and a small chip in one of the bones in my wrist. I had an x-ray done in the ED which picked up the small crack in the bone, it did not pick up anything else. The radiographer said to the doctor I want a CT scan done. So, they did a CT scan which found the fracture at the base of my thumb. They then put on a cast for the thumb and I was allowed to go home.

Then a week after I went back and they cut the cast off and said there was nothing wrong with the thumb. I questioned them about the CT scan I had done and they told me there was no CT scan. They put it in a splint, which was on for two weeks, my thumb was numb, and still is at this point, as anything. The other doctor said there was no break. And showed me the x-ray. They apparently didn’t believe me that there was a CT scan.

I used to be a nurse and I know what a CT scan is and I know there was a CT scan done because I was there. This doctor said no, no I’ll put you in a bigger splint. I had an appointment recently because I couldn’t handle it the numbness in my thumb. There was a prickle in my thumb I couldn’t feel was there because of the numbness. I didn't know it was there until I was putting moisturiser on my face and felt it there.

I said I need to see someone about this, it needs to be put right. This other doctor only seemed to care about arthritis. I felt the reception was really good, and they got me in the next day. They got me my preference of doctor. This new doctor was really good and went through the x ray and saw the chip and the bone that was broken, and he went through the CT and saw the chip wasn’t dislodged. I am now, at the time of telling this story, back in plaster for two more weeks. This new doctor was quite pleasant.

I was so disappointed; my arm was aching all the time. They just refused to check it out and I felt the doctor two weeks ago was quite rude. I knew there was something wrong.

Dear capellaxx64,

Thank you for providing us with your valuable feedback. I am very disappointed to hear your journey as a patient attending our Emergency Department was such a negative experience.

I can only imagine the discomfort and frustration you felt being caught between the differences of opinions regarding your medical imaging and feeling that your concerns were not heard by the initial treating doctor.

It is so important that you feel that you can trust that you will receive high quality healthcare, should you need it, and I would very much appreciate it if you would contact Mr Scott Jones, Operations Manager at Kalgoorlie Hospital, so that he can facilitate a thorough investigation of the issues that you have raised. Scott can be contacted on 08 9080 5817 or via email at Scott.Jones2@health.wa.gov.au and would welcome hearing from you.

I sincerely apologise for your experience and do hope that you are on the road to recovery.

Kind Regards,

Peter Tredinnick
