"Lack of consistency with treatment and information"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Kalgoorlie Outpatient Clinic

(as the patient),

I was recently admitted to the D ward for lower abdominal pain. I had also presented to ED twice prior to my week long admission. I can not thank the ED & D ward staff enough for the support and care that was provided. I felt the D ward staff went above and beyond to make sure I was as comfortable as I could be. I found with the medical team I was under, I was very much left in the dark.

Tests and ultrasounds had been undertaken and I believe was receiving different information from each doctor. The doctor advised they were unsure what was causing the pain and would refer me to another hospital. I asked if I could please be transferred to Perth as a private patient as I was in a lot of pain and something has to be wrong. I was not transferred to Perth but was told that a referral was sent to this other hospital as a private patient and was also provided with a list of specialists to see in Perth. I had a support member also advocate I go to Perth as Kalgoorlie doctors had let me know they are unsure what is causing this pain and said it could be Chronic pelvic pain. I felt like this was just an answer to give so I could be discharged.

During my stay, I felt I was not understood or taken seriously with my pain. I had fallen to the floor from the pain unable to walk but was still discharged home after one Doctor advising I will need another ultrasound as they mentioned and as I recalled, that a cyst could have burst but it's only going to get better from here if it did. But the next morning another doctor said you can go home and you have chronic pelvic pain, do not worry about another ultrasound. I believe this was an easy answer to provide. With my past medical history, I believe this should have been looked into further.

I have now presented to a private hospital in Perth out of my own pocket as I feel Kalgoorlie has made me feel I can not present to ED as I am an unknown cause to the team. I explained my experience to the Perth hospital and I believe they are shocked no further treatment was undertaken and said staying in hospital for a week tells me you are in pain and you need help. On examination in Perth, the doctor was able to advise right away what the issue was via an internal examination. which was not undertaken in Kalgoorlie Hospital. I am still in pain but feel I can not present to ED as I am an unknown cause and can not be helped here at KRH. I have been seen in the outpatient clinic and have now been discharged from the service.

Dear blackbirdyq86,

Thank you for sharing your experience with us on Care Opinion.

I am very sorry to read of your concerns regarding the care you received at Kalgoorlie Hospital, particularly that you feel you were not taken seriously in relation to the pain you were experiencing and the mixed messages from your treating doctors. This must have been a very worrying time for you and I sincerely apologise that you felt some staff were not understanding and didn’t hear your concerns.

I want you to feel confident to come into Kalgoorlie Hospital, or any other of our health services, if you need care in the future. In this regard, I would really appreciate it if you could contact us so that we can better understand your journey. If you are happy to, please contact Dr Neill Kling, our Director Medical Services, on 08 9080 5802 or via email neill.kling@health.wa.gov.au

In relation to the out of pocket expenses incurred when you travelled to Perth, I want to let you know about our Patient Assisted Travel Scheme (PATS). PATS provides financial assistance for travel and accommodation costs for eligible WA country residents to access their nearest medical specialist service if it is not available locally. If you would like to speak to someone about PATS, please call Margaret Smillie on 9080 5681 or contact her via email at:

PATS.Kalgoorlie@health.wa.gov.au

Your story is a powerful reminder to all of us about the importance of collaborating and communicating with our patients, and their families and carers in the decisions being made about their care. I will be sharing your experience with staff at meetings and staff development sessions so we can continue to improve the way we care for and communicate with our patients, their families and carers.

Thank you, again, for taking the time to write to us and for your kind words about the staff in Emergency Department and D Ward. I will make sure that they are aware of your complimentary feedback.

I do hope that we hear from you soon.

Kind regards,

Peter Tredinnick
