(as a service user),

I have a PICC line in and have to have the Baxter bottle changed every day for 6 weeks, including weekends where I have to have it done in ED. My problem is recently, and last weekend, it’s taken between 1 1/2 - 2 hrs each visit to have this bottle changed. (One Sunday recently, it only took 30-45 mins so ok with that). I believe it takes less than 2 minutes to disconnect the old bottle and connect to a new one. I am guessing because it would be classed as triage 5, I believe they wouldn’t even look at the file to see it’s going to take 2 mins to get me in and out. Frustrated is an understatement. I still have just under 5 weeks to go but don’t think I’ll be going in to get my bottles changed on a weekend! I must add though I never had a problem with the staff, they were really nice, so can’t fault them!

Hi craterwe36,

I would like to apologise to you for the long waits you have experienced in the emergency department to change your Baxter bottle at the weekends. You are absolutely right that you would have been triaged as a 5, as your care was important but not urgent and we see patient's in order of acuity. I do understand how frustrating this experience is and want to assure you that we are working to improve this process.

Ideally we will have a HNDS service at the weekends so that your appointment is booked and not reliant on the sick patients in ED as to when you will be seen. We are in the process of recruiting to that role at present. I believe the medications are often having to be located and drawn up by the ED staff as the bottles are not always pre-loaded with the correct medications, which also takes time and this is also being reviewed.

I do hope that your experiences with the staff continue to be positive in the ED and thank you for saying so. Thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention and I hope you continue your regime and recover quickly.
