"Made to feel I was doing the wrong thing"

About: Broome Community Health Service

(as a parent/guardian),

Ever since seeing a doctor when my bub was 5-6 weeks old, where I was given advice, I had been offering my baby feeds every 1.5 hours. At this time they also began to sleep around 13 hours each night - waking once for a feed at about the 8 hour mark. This did not concern me as my bub was still gaining enough weight and having 7-8 feeds in a 24 hour period.

My bub is now nearly 4 months old and I took them to the drop in clinic to be weighed and measured. At this appointment the clinician told me that bub's weight was now out of proportion with their height and head circumference and that I should not be feeding so frequently (should be 3-4 hourly by this age). I was also told that bub shouldn’t be sleeping such a long block and they should be waking at around 6 hours to have a feed during the night. I explained that this is the routine that we had developed due to previous advice from a doctor but was still made to feel like I was doing the wrong thing by my baby. This made me feel really awful and doubt myself and my instincts as a mother.

I have since been back to the doctor to get a second opinion where I was reassured that my bub is eating fine (just a bit of a “snacker”) and sleeping longer at night to account for short day naps. The doctor also said that it sounds like I am just responding to and meeting my baby’s needs. They acknowledged that it would be ideal if bub had followed the percentile line around but also stated that when they begin to crawl and move about, it should sort itself out.

Dear NewMum2021,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with us, especially in the busy first months of life with your newborn.

I sincerely apologise that your interactions with our service left you feeling as though you were doing the wrong thing by your baby. Receiving conflicting information from your care providers can be frustrating and confusing, especially when you are getting to know your baby and how to best meet their needs.

I would love to speak with you to find out some more about your experience and the changes we can make to ensure our service supports families and babies.

My name is Kato Matthews and I am the A/ Director Kimberley Population Health Unit. You can call me on 0428 285 488 or email kate.matthews@health.wa.gov.au.

I hope to speak with you soon.

Best wishes,

Kato Matthews

Dear NewMum2021,

Thank you for your call to discuss your concerns further. I really appreciate your time.

As we discussed, some of your suggestions involved staff education opportunities in compassionate care and communication.

I am pleased to confirm that this year’s Regional Community Health Forum will focus on vulnerable families, communication, strength-based approaches and trauma-informed care of self and others.

The Kimberley team are finalising an exciting and uplifting program in recognition of the value of our staff and the services they offer to families like yours.

Best wishes

Kato Matthews

A/Director, Kimberley Population Health Unit
