"Dislocated in Dalwallinu"

About: Dalwallinu Health Service St John Ambulance WA

(as the patient),

Towards the end of a wildflower strewn wander out yonder in Mid Western Australia, I arrived invigorated at my lodgings for the night, the beautifully restored Old Dalwallinu Convent, perhaps overenthusiastically. I loaded up with luggage from the car and headed to my room - while crossing the brick paved verandah I tripped on one of my own straps and fell heavily on my right shoulder then followed with a big bang on my forehead. My loud "invocations' quickly drew a concerned group of Convent staff, other guests, a friendly black cat (or was it gloating?) and a melodic butcher bird in a nearby tree, not to mention my very alarmed wife! The local volunteer ambulance was called and arrived soon after - in the meantime the hotel sacrificed frozen chicken nuggets to ease the rapidly rising lump on my forehead while a guest found a soft coat to put under my head.

The friendly ambulance crew made an assessment, then carefully moved me on to a stretcher - which included straightening my bizarrely akimbo arm -  and with assistance from the bystanders loaded me into the ambulance for the short drive to the hospital.

The hospital staff who were equally friendly and professional made me comfortable and went through all the preparations for the Doctor's arrival. The Doctor, the local GP, was holding surgery in the town, but came over after that was finished. He confirmed other's assumptions then outlined his  proposed course of action (appropriate drugs then manipulation). He listened to my concerns and took an x-ray to confirm there were no fractures, then having waited till the drugs to effect - efficiently returned my shoulder to where it should be.

After the procedure the doctor and the nurses gave me advice re looking after my shoulder and discharged me in my wife's care.

Given all the circumstances, this was a positive experience, and I'm glad that if it was going to happen it happened in Dalwallinu.

Dear correspondencexn58,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent experience to Dalwallinu Hospital.

I read your ordeal with great interest but tempered in the knowledge that your accident could have led to a more serious outcome for you.

I am glad you will recover fully from your injury.

I was pleased to read that you received a high level of skilled, compassionate care with each interaction of our health care system and it seems, including the staff from the Convent.

I will be delighted to provide your feedback to the hospital staff, ambulance volunteers and doctor involved in your care who all provide a wonderful service for their community.

I wish you safe travels.

Trenton
