The lack of care and compassion was so frightening I wanted to get up and run out of the hospital just prior to my operation. In my experience, the atmosphere in theatre was so toxic, unfriendly and not one word of reassurance was given to me. In my opinion, there was definitely something wrong within the staff who I saw, who seemed extremely unhappy and almost aggressive. I felt post-operative care also left a lot to be desired. I even had to carry my own heavy bag on being discharged after having a total hysterectomy the previous day. I am a woman aged over 60 yrs. The night staff and the young man who wheeled me out to the car park were the only ones who showed any care. Mind you, I had to ask for a wheelchair.
This experience was in complete contrast to the treatment I received at the same hospital 2-3yrs before under similar circumstances when I felt well cared for. I fear for our community who may, and I feel sure they will, experience the same treatment. I will do my utmost to be treated at a different hospital after my experience, but I may not have that choice.
