"Poor communication"

About: Dandenong Hospital

(as a carer),

My parent had a ?TIA recently. They were sent to Dandenong Hosp by their GP. The following day, the treating Dr was preparing to discharge my parent stating the CT scan was NAD, however, my parent had slurred speech. I insisted the Dr arrange an MRI, with no success.

Just prior to discharge, my parent had another ‘event’. Following another CT they remained at Dandenong. After several phone calls I managed to speak with the treating Dr, who advised that my parent has narrowing of blood vessel at the back of the brain.

My parent remained at Dandenong for three days when they were transferred to Clayton into the Stroke unit.

My parent continue to keep me updated advising each day they will have an MRI ‘soon’. My parent's speech continues to be slurred. Two days later, I was yet to receive a phone call from a Dr to advise of an update and what the plan is moving forward.

I understand dr/ nurses are all busy. However, we, the patient's advocate, can not be there with them during these difficult times due to Covid restrictions. We rely on open, transparent feedback and communication to keep us updated. I had made several calls to the ward, having to speak to the nurse, if the call is answered,  wanting to speak with the Dr. The nursing staff ask that I phone back when the Dr is on the ward. It’s a terrible merry go round.

In my opinion, this would not be tolerated in aged care and believe the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission would follow up with the provider.

I’m yet to hear back from Dandenong hospital to follow up with the complaint I submitted.

In my opinion, the public health system sucks.
