"Emergency Department wait times"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Recently, I called an ambulance for my partner due to their GP recommending they attend Joondalup Hospital. My partner was experiencing severe kidney pain. I called an ambulance, which arrived after 90 minutes. In my opinion, this wait time was too long.

When we arrived in Emergency, we presented to triage in the afternoon. My partner was in severe pain and categorised as a Level 3. Why was my partner categorised as a Level 3? How do you categorise patients? I recalled my partner was not offered any pain relief in the meantime.

We have private health insurance, and I felt this made no difference to the wait times we experienced. How do we access shorter wait times at a private health facility?

We waited on the waiting room chairs as requested. We waited there until later in the night. Five hours later, we were accepted into the ED treating areas. The nurse told us they only had 1 machine to do the scan. We had to wait an hour to get the scan and another hour to receive the results. We did not leave the hospital until the early hours of the morning the next day.

Dear monocerosdh33

Thank you for providing your feedback on Care Opinion and giving us the opportunity to read and reflect on your experience. As a hospital dedicated to providing a high standard of emergency care, we are sorry to read of the concerns you have raised regarding your partner’s care whilst attending the Joondalup Health Campus (JHC) Emergency Department (ED).

When arriving in ED all patients are assessed by experienced senior Emergency nurses using the Australasian Triage Scale (ATS) which is an assessment of clinical acuity. The ATS aims to ensure that patients are treated in order of their clinical urgency which refers to the need for time-critical intervention. Patients are seen according to the clinical severity of their presentation and therefore some patients will be seen sooner after their arrival than others due to their presenting condition.

The financial election of patients, public or private, is not a contributing factor to a patient’s ATS category. Patients requiring admission to an inpatient ward at JHC have the option of electing to be admitted as a public or private patient.

The JHC ED strive to meet the WA Emergency Access Target which requires that 90% of all patients presenting to a public hospital emergency department will be seen and admitted, transferred or discharged within 4 hours. Depending on the number of presentations to ED on a given day, including ambulance presentations, and the clinical acuity of those presentations, this target is often difficult to achieve.

It is important to us that we investigate all the details of your partner's presentation to obtain an understanding of what happened and to identify if there were things that we could have done differently. We would be grateful if you could contact our consumer liaison office on 08 9400 9672 or email ConsumerLiaison.JHC@ramsayhealth.com.au as we would like to obtain further details from you and your partner. Once we have completed our investigation, we would be happy to provide you with our feedback. You can discuss how you would like to receive this feedback, when you contact our consumer liaison office.

Thank you again for taking the trouble to contact us through Care Opinion.

Please accept our best wishes for your partner’s good health.

Kind regards,

Holly Landers
