"More COVID vaccination venues"

About: Department of Health WA

(as a parent/guardian),

Firstly I would like to say how much I appreciate the work going into WA Covid vaccination clinics and test centres in the bid to combat this horrid virus.

I have no issue with the staff at that clinic and I think they are all amazing. They are doing the best job possible with the resources they have. Despite this, I would like to express a concern.

My adult child had their first Pfizer vaccine at a Perth metropolitan COVID clinic a few weeks ago in the afternoon. They had an appointment but they had to wait 2 hours prior to their vaccination. I appreciate that we all wait in lines every day in lots of situations. However, I fear that unacceptable long waiting times at vaccination clinics may discourage people to be vaccinated. I feel this in turn may slow vaccination rates in WA adversely, affecting our herd immunity.

I would like to see more venues for vaccination right across WA that are adequately staffed to ensure waiting lines are zeroed or minimal. Perhaps this recommendation could be a KPI.

Together we can make a difference to slow the spread of this virus. I believe we just need better opportunities to get vaccinated! Thank you.

This response has been published by Care Opinion on behalf of the COVID-19 Vaccination Program WA:

Dear octoberhq58,

Thank you for your feedback. I am very sorry about the situation you have outlined in your letter. Our goal is for vaccinations to be as simple as possible, and this was clearly not your child’s experience. I have passed your feedback on to the relevant team for their consideration.

We are continually expanding our clinic sizes and locations, and now, community pharmacies are also offering COVID-19 vaccinations in addition to participating general practices (GPs) and GP respiratory clinics. Weekend vaccination appointments at our State-run clinics are also part of our strategy to ensure that vaccines are accessible to as many people as possible, and we endeavour to ensure our clinics are appropriately staffed to avoid lengthy waiting times.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your adult child’s story and for your family’s commitment to being vaccinated against COVID-19.

Kind regards

Sue Kiely
