"Hospital infection spread"

About: Royal Perth Hospital

(as the patient),

I was in hospital for one month. When I was discharged I had picked up a viral hospital infection which will now require me to be isolated on any future hospitalisation occurrences.

My infection was considered likely picked up from my use of the two toilets or showers I believe, that were available to 8 other patients of the same gender on the ward (NB: also used by the public I believe) or by the dust borne particle spread via the cleaning system, but not the aircon systems because in my opinion, there would have been many more cases of infection very quickly and I believe that wasn’t the case, so aircon spread was unlikely.

The current spread of Covid19 virus within the hospital system is a stark reminder for me of having picked up this virus and so I will describe how I believe room cleaning process contributes to the transmission of the infection.

My memories of seeing room cleaning processes make me shiver. I observed the cleaners or nurses grab the sheets and whisk them off the beds and I watched as the dead skin cells are flicked into the air and float around as dust particles for up to 5 minutes. There are usually four beds per ward occupancy, so this happens 4 times.

Then the floor cleaner comes in and wooshes in around with a wet mop where they can reach due to all the equipment around of course. I believe this also moves those dead skin cells as well as tissues or bottle tops or whatever else, around under each other person’s bed. Then there’s surface cleaning with one rag going over all surfaces where the 4 patients lie.

My observation was that there’s only partial room cleaning, no wonder infection spreads; I believe there’s plenty of dead skin particles left in the rooms.

I believe nurses, cleaning staff, other staff, visitors and patients become germ carriers and spreaders. I feel, if Covid is to be contained in the hospital systems, please review the changing of sheets too.
