A month ago I found myself at rock bottom. I was driving without a licence, having a depressive episode and feeling like giving up on life.
From this seemingly "no hope" position came something wonderful.
The Police Officer that pulled me over wrote a referral to Lives Lived Well in Warwick so that I might receive support for my Alcohol and Cannabis addiction.
Since then, my life has turned around.
I have weekly Zoom appointments to discuss challenges and strategies to abstain from my target behaviours. From setting a few humble goals has come positive momentum. In one month I've gone from feeling hopeless to waking each morning feeling content and building on the positive feeling continuum to positive expectation, belief, enthusiasm, eagerness and passion.
Thanks to the encouragement I've received from my counsellor, Alex, my life is flourishing.
I'm now 30+ days clean and sober, enrolled in a positive mindset course and have just signed up to teach what I've learnt to others. This addresses my long-term goal to be a peer support worker and living a life I and my family can be proud of.
Having support has made the difference between success and failure. This journey, in one month, has reunited me with my adult son. This is the most compelling reason to keep going.
I have a mood disorder, Bipolar and two Personality Disorders, Borderline Personality Disorder and Histrionic Disorder. Staying straight and sober means the medication has a chance to work and I am in a much better position to manage my emotions. All of my close relationships are benefiting from my abstinence.
I encourage everyone on a recovery journey to reach out to Lives Lived Well because I tried to do it alone and failed, multiple times. For the first time since my early 20s, I can see success in my future.
