"Wait for anaphylactic reaction care"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Rushed to ER after COVID vaccine due to anaphylactic reaction. Get there, no bed, and left me wait at public waiting room for hours. I believe the paramedics care more than the nurses and doctors here.

Try to ask something to nurse at triage but I believe they’re too busy chatting around and they don't seem caring nor helpful at all. I recall, they just said we will send you Panadol and you have to wait for 5 hrs.

Is this what you call ER in Australia? At the time of writing this, there is only few people here yet I feel clinicians are so slow pace and, in my opinion letting people die in the waiting area. I believe, 3rd world country is way better coz I believe an ER is like ER in US where everyone is busy and in rush to treat people and not people treated like their lives ain’t important.

What does this hospital do for someone with anaphylactic reaction? After adrenaline shot will they seemingly just let them wait in waiting area & take them for granted? I believe the ambulance should have not taken me to this place, in my opinion, this is a joke! I’d rather be at home and wait in the comfort of my home where I will lie in a proper bed than be left sitting in a hard, plastic chair all the time to be seen.

Dear robinsw35,

Thank you for providing your feedback on Care Opinion and giving us the opportunity to read and reflect on your experience. As a hospital dedicated to providing a high standard of emergency care, we are sorry to read of the concerns you have raised regarding your care whilst attending the Joondalup Health Campus (JHC) Emergency Department (ED).

When arriving to JHC ED all patients are assessed by experienced senior Emergency nurses using the Australasian Triage Scale (ATS) which is an assessment of clinical acuity. The ATS aims to ensure that patients are treated in order of their clinical urgency which refers to the need for time-critical intervention. Patients are seen according to the clinical severity of their presentation and therefore some patients will be seen sooner after their arrival than others due to their presenting condition.

JHC always strive to provide safe and quality patient care. It is important to us that we investigate all the details of your presentation to obtain an understanding of what happened and to identify if there were things that we could have done differently. We would be grateful if you could contact our consumer liaison office on 08 9400 9672 or ConsumerLiaison.JHC@ramsayhealth.com.au as we would like to obtain further details from you. Once we have completed our investigation, we would be happy to provide you with our feedback. You can discuss how you would like to receive this feedback, when you contact our consumer liaison office.

Thank you again for taking the trouble to contact us through Care Opinion.

Please accept our best wishes for your ongoing good health.

Kind regards,

Holly Landers
