In 2019 I was admitted to the Ipswich Hospital Acute mental health ward. I entered under drug induced psychosis. I was seen by a psychiatrist and then, I felt, left for days to fend for myself. Only being able to ask for medication from the over staffed workers.
I was appalled when I saw drugs in the mental health unit that, I understand, others had brought in. I reported this to someone. I didn’t like the fact that we had to eat in a community dining room and couldn’t have the option to eat alone if wanted. I believe if we where physically unwell in the hospital we would have the option of eating alone, so I felt we should for the mental side of things as well.
The main thing was there was seemingly no psychologist or counselling on board to talk to. You would see the psychiatrist as they requested but I felt there was no one there for real help and support. I was disappointed and discharged too soon I believe. I was not given any referrals, out into the community I was left to my own devices. I believe that it would be better supported if there was a psychologist or counseling available and peer support workers.
In my opinion, more groups would be the go as well. I believe that mindfulness groups and groups on communication wouldn’t go astray.
