"My partner's experience"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward

(as a carer),

When my elderly partner was transported to Bunbury Regional Hospital after a fall with fractured ribs and a collapsed lung, I took all their medication with me but was told to take them home.

The next day when I visited my partner, their whole body was jerking uncontrollably. I inquired if they had been given their Parkinson's & Alzheimer's medication as I'd never seen them as bad as that. The first nurse I asked said it was nothing to do with them, the second said they didn't know, and it seemed that obviously, they weren't going to find out for me.

After a while, I found another nurse who looked up straight away in my partner's file on a table just outside the ward and found that my partner hadn't been given their medication. The nurse asked the second nurse (who had told me they didn't know), why, and, I recall, the answer was they couldn't find any, but when instructed to get down to the pharmacy now, they were able to get my partner's medication.

I found the ward for four patients very cramped, nowhere to sit and visit, and I felt that it was very hard to get someone to take my partner to the toilet when they needed to desperately go.

My experience was not a good one, in my opinion, they were not very helpful, I know the nurses have a lot to do, but I feel that just a small help when it is needed would go a long way.

Dear letsw58,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of your partner’s care at Bunbury Hospital on Care Opinion. I was saddened to read your feedback and would love the opportunity to speak with you directly and apologise that the care we provided you and your partner wasn’t at the level it should have been.

We are working hard with our teams to improve the care for people with complex health problems and I am sorry that we did not get it right for you and your partner. I am pleased to read that after your persistence the correct medication was sourced but regret that this delay caused your partner discomfort with their symptoms.

Bunbury Hospital is currently undergoing a service development process and within that, we are looking at ways to care for people in our acute wards so as to ensure that the most appropriate care is provided based on the person’s specific needs. This will include addressing ward environments to make them more aged friendly and enable the staff working in them to be able to care for people in a more caring, responsive and person-centred way.

My name is Ceri Elliott and I am the Director of Nursing and Midwifery at Bunbury Hospital and I will be happy to speak with you further about your experience if you would like to. Please feel free to call me at a time that is convenient to you on 0447 793 904.

Again, thank you for sharing your story with us. I do hope that we hear from you soon.

Ceri Elliott
