Went to clinical labs at St. John of god hospital in Midland, as my toddler child required blood test.
Chose this location specifically as I was told by GP they had vr goggles to distract children having a blood test.
1. Got there, and nurse hadn’t heard of vr activity
2. Nurse told coworker & they eventually found it
3. Nurse asked coworker to assist with blood test, as they weren't comfortable doing children (I appreciated/respect this).
4. Child sat on my lap, one nurse pinned my child’s arm, whilst other nurse took blood.
5. I felt it was so horrific to watch as a parent, the force they seemed to use. My child was screaming. I believe no numbing cream was used. My child left with finger mark dents all up their arm, with some bleeding, I believe due to over force of nurse digging their nail into my child whilst trying to restrain them.
6. I was in complete shock I couldn’t even say anything. I couldn’t believe what I just saw!
It seems to me that as a result, 3 months on, I went to see a child health nurse (office is light, bright, toys, no real ‘scary’ medical equipment around), and my child screamed with fear.
I feel this 1 blood test has really affected my child, and left them traumatised.
As a parent, I don’t want any other parent to have to go through this, or have their child afraid of medical practices. It’s awful.
To fix this, I think training needs to be provided to those drawing blood about best way to go about this for a child and also be made aware that their actions can really affect our kids.
