"Emergency Department"

About: Perth Children's Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Our child is less than a year old with highly complex care needs and is under the care of several disciplines at PCH, including Haematology, Neurology, ENT, Cardiology, Neonatology, Genetics etc.

Over the past 8 months we have unfortunately had to visit ED multiple times for a variety of reasons and words cannot express our gratitude to the amazing doctors and nurses in the ED.

By name, we can remember Dr Sarah (who on our last visit, looked after us and chased up multiple doctors, including doctors from another hospital on our behalf) and who was amazingly caring, professional and kind. We were so grateful for her reassurance and diligence in helping us through an extremely difficult time.

We also remember Tyler, the nurse, who checked on our child, took care of us as parents and was just an extraordinary person, both professionally and personally. Tyler was also able to assist with cannulating our child who is unfortunately very difficult to access. We are forever grateful to Tyler for his kindness and first class competence.

We also remember Peter, the nurse, who was friendly, warm and blew bubbles for our child to help distract them. Peter was reassuring and professional and we were delighted with how our child responded to his playfulness at a time our child was at risk of losing it and crying.

There was also an extraordinary doctor who ordered an emergency CT scan for our child many months ago in the early hours of the morning. Our child had what we perceived to be serious potential neurological symptoms and while the CT did not reveal anything not already known to their medical team, we were so astronomically grateful to this doctor - who's name we can't remember but we really hope she sees this message - for taking us seriously at the time and ordering the scan. Given the nature of our child's condition (which is life threatening) we were so very grateful to her for listening to us.

Our child has a life threatening condition which is in part a serious medical mystery and while this necessitates many trips to ED (which have also resulted in admissions) we have always been so grateful to the wonderful nurses, doctors and staff we have met there. We can see how busy they are, how understaffed they appear to be, and how overwhelming the needs are at times and so their individual care, attention to detail, acts of kindness and first class professionalism are so deeply appreciated by our family.

God bless you all - we pray for you daily and are so grateful to you for your service to others and our child!

Dear augusthp8,

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive feedback of your experience in our Emergency Department at Perth Children’s Hospital. I will ensure that your thoughtful comments are passed on to all staff involved, as I’m sure they will be delighted to hear your kind words.

It was really encouraging to read how our ED staff went above and beyond to ensure you and your daughter felt comfortable and secure during what I imagine must have been a stressful time for both of you.

Our staff work exceptionally hard and are encouraged to demonstrate our organisation’s core values of Accountability, Collaboration, Compassion, Equity, Excellence and Respect, and this is such a wonderful example from everyone involved with your child’s care.

Feedback such as yours is both humbling and pivotal in encouraging, supporting and inspiring our staff, so thank you so much for taking the time to let us know.

Wishing you and your family much health and happiness.

Kind regards,

Sue Baker
