"Poor care and treatment during consultation"

About: Albany Health Campus / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

We were referred to Albany Health Campus from another hospital over 8 weeks ago. Didn't receive a letter in the mail advising of the appointment date and time. Received a text message on the Sunday for a Tuesday appointment. Attended the appointment under the understanding that they were following up on the recommendations from the other hospital's Neonate specialist. This appointment was supposed to be with the specialist. Upon going into the appointment we were introduced to the specialist, a student, a nurse and another Dr. Once in the appointment, the specialist left the room so the other Dr did the physical examination on our infant and was discussing their findings out loud so the student could transcribe for them, this was fine and they were thorough.

After this was completed, the specialist came back in the room and said as I recalled, ok I'm going to be the bad cop here. Your child is majorly underweight and we are going to do "this" and if we don't do "this" we are admitting them. Totally undermining the specialist from the other hospital who has been one of our primary health specialists on a regular basis since baby was born. I felt the specialist and the Dr were not interested or willing to listen to me as I was wanting to let them know what the existing plan was. The drs continued to talk over me during the appointment and I felt they were not interested in my input into my child's care and taking into consideration my own current health conditions that arose from childbirth.

In my opinion, the specialist was belittling in front of other health professionals in what was said and the manner that it was said in. I felt bullied by them as I had gone into the appointment willingly to be open and receptive of input from what I believe were so-called health professionals. I left the appointment feeling upset as I felt what was said to me by the specialist was clearly that I'm not doing a good job, and that it wasn't good enough and that the nurse is going to be checking in with me weekly, and I would see them in two months time.

Since this appointment, I have spoken to other health professionals and their advice is to stay with the team at the other hospital and that there is nothing to be concerned about with my child's health.

The specialist has also referred baby to a local dietitian whom I do not wish to place any trust in as the impression so far has not been very professional or satisfactory of the health service from the Albany Health Campus.

Dear baby2021,

Thank you very much for sharing your story on Care Opinion Australia.

The first thing I would like to say is how sorry I am for how you have been left feeling. We want to provide compassionate care within an atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding between our patients and their families their treating teams. It is never our intention to treat our patients in the way that you describe and I sincerely apologise that you left your recent appointment feeling this way. I am also very disappointed to read that you felt that the Specialist undermined the advice of your previous Specialist and that you felt bullied, not listened to and talked over.

I am very concerned that you feel unsure about returning to our Paediatric team for the care that your baby requires and I am keen to ensure there is a plan in place to support your baby to better health. If you are happy to, please contact me so that I can talk about how we can support you and your baby and discuss a number of options that are available to you in Albany. My name is Juan Clark and I am the Operations Manager at the Albany Health Campus. Please feel free to call me at a time of your convenience on 9892 2325.

In relation to paediatric services in the Great Southern, these are provided by a team of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals who work together and provide care and treatment according to the needs of our patients. We receive Paediatric referrals from local doctors, as well as doctors in Perth, and patients are seen based on the urgency of the care they need. Once the urgency is agreed, a paediatric nurse contacts our patient and their family to understand what is happening. The first appointment is important and, as you describe, will usually include a Paediatric Specialist, and possibly a GP specialising in Paediatrics, as well as a medical student (with permission from our patient or their family) and a paediatric nurse. Together with our patient and their family, the team formulates a care plan, which can require a number of visits to the paediatric service or other health professionals, including dieticians. In relation to appointment letters, these are not always sent out due to delays in delivery. It is our usual practice to call patients and their family upon which an appointment date and time is agreed upon; this is then followed up by an SMS reminder generated automatically a few days before the appointment. I am sorry that there was confusion about your appointment date and will be following this up with the appropriate Manager.

Thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback. We genuinely value hearing about the experiences of our patients, their families and carers so that we can identify opportunities to improve the services we provide.

I do hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Juan Clark
