"Ectopic pregnancy"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / Emergency Department Joondalup Health Campus / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I came into ED with sharp lower abdomen pains and PV spotting. I was laying there for about two hours and had not been seen to by my ED Dr. Briefly, for about 30 seconds, I saw them when I came in.

I had asked the nurse after 2 hours of laying in ED if the Dr will see me or do blood tests, ultrasound, anything? The nurse did ask the Dr and they came to see me shortly after. I recall the Dr said to me, it’s definitely not ectopic, without doing an ultrasound. They definitely ruled out that it was ectopic as, in my understanding, I never had a history of this before.

I recall the Dr said, I can’t do an ultrasound unless you're bleeding heavily and soiling pads within the hour, and you're not. They said I can take some pain medication for now and if that makes it better that’s great. They then sent me home again a few hours later, and had only done an HCG test and found out my blood group type.

I then came back to ED 5 days later with more persistent lower abdominal pain and the pain had gotten worse. I was still having minimal spotting at the time. The DR I had seen that day requested an ultrasound straight away and they found out I had a 2.5cm embryo growing in my right Fallopian tube. I went to have emergency surgery later that evening. I was lucky my Fallopian tube did not rupture yet.

I felt really upset that they didn’t do something the first time I was in ED at Joondalup Health Campus, Perth. WA.

Dear Hopeful92,

The first thing I would like to say is how sorry I am to hear you had an ectopic pregnancy. Losing a pregnancy is distressing at the best of times and what you describe does not align with the high standard of emergency care Joondalup Health Campus (JHC) Emergency Department (ED) strives to provide its patients, although I am pleased to hear that surgery was performed following your second presentation prior to any complications.

Our expectation for all patients that present to Joondalup Health Campus (JHC) Emergency Department (ED), is that they are provided with a thorough assessment based on the merits of their presenting symptoms.

We would like to learn more about your presentation so that we can investigate what happened and what could have been done differently to prevent this from happening to anybody else. While we respect that you may prefer to remain anonymous, we would be grateful if you could contact our Consumer Liaison Office on 08 9400 9672 or email consumerliaison.jhc@ramsayhealth.com.au.

We will investigate your situation and provide you with feedback at the end of the process. Thank you again for taking the trouble to contact us through Care Opinion. We hope to hear from you soon but wish you all the best regardless of the decision you make in this regard.

Kind regards,

Dr Kevin Hartley
