I have lived in Kalgoorlie for over 15 years and, as a mum with two boys, have had frequent trips to ED. However, my last trip was very different from any other time before.
My son’s ailments were difficult to diagnose but we knew something wasn’t right. The doctors in ED were thorough in their investigations because, as they said: “We believe parents.” "Did I take his temp?" No, we felt his head but we knew he had a temp when we left the house. The doctors’ response was - “Yes, we believe you, did he maybe sleep on his neck funny hence the pain?" No, he’s never done that, there is something else. The doctors’ response was - “OK, we believe you.”
Bloods were drawn and a technician called in to check the bloods in the early hours of the morning! We were not sent away to come back in the morning for this.
My son was then admitted to the children’s ward - he was seen to and looked after by more doctors than we ever had access to at the KRH.
He undertook many tests and, whilst he was diagnosed with a number of issues - because the doctors were so thorough, they found an underlying condition that was never ever found in my son before. It is actually serious enough for us to now go to Perth for further testing.
I have told this story to everyone in town and when I tell them about this amazing service, people’s eyes actually light up with pride.
Thank you to the Department of Health for putting children first and to all the doctors and nurses - wow, what amazing service. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your care to regional kids and parents!
"Amazing care from Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital"
