"My partner"

About: Royal Adelaide Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My partner was admitted to the RAH recently with a fractured femur. As their epilepsy had become unstable surgery was done a couple of days after admission. I have no problems with that side of things. I believe the surgery went well and my partner was unwell after surgery for a few days which I took as being part of what they had been thru.

The problem came when a pressure type injury on their right heel. There was conflict, where we were told they had this when they were admitted, which I believe is completely false as they have regular feet checks done with a podiatrist where we live.

My partner was discharged to another hospital (Hospital A) for roughly 2 weeks and is now in respite at another hospital (Hospital B). Where they have taken photographs of my partner's heel and my partner was told the heel was not dressed regularly by anyone and it did burst at Hospital A. In my opinion, it isn't good enough that this issue was not treated by RAH and steps taken to make sure it was healing better than it is.

My partner was told more recently they have to keep it up and rested or they could lose their foot. At the moment until, the dead tissue is gone, they don't know how much damage is there. Why can a big city hospital seemingly not see this was not a injury from my partner's fall but as I can figure out it would possibly be from their surgery as the leg would have been in a few different angles etc. My partner is a type 2 diabetic and we don't wish to see the need for amputation of their foot which would devastate them completely.

The hospital staff, at Hospital B, took photographs of my partner's heel for the records and now I must keep my partner's morale up and try to stop them thinking of the worst-case scenario.
