My elderly father with lewy body dementia broke his hip from a fall. He went from the nursing home to another hospital (I have sent a separate email to them) to RPH to be operated on.
The whole process for the family we felt was great person centred care and great communication with the family from the medical staff on each shift always checking with the family their understanding of the problems and listening to the family’s story. Whilst we found that the handover from one hospital to another had a slight miscommunication, RPH medical staff listened and learnt as we went along. We cannot speak highly enough of the staff at RPH, including a male doctor who did ring in the middle of the night and the surgeon, Michael and the anaesthetist, Scott, who took the time to speak to us.
We found the nurse in recovery was also fantastic (my apologies for not getting her name) as were the nurses on ward 5G, including, Ollie and Paige.
Please pass on our thanks and gratitude to the teams/people involved (we know there were other staff involved) and let them know we fully appreciate the time and care given to this old bloke and his family during this crisis. Particularly listening to the 'lack of capacity' and 'not for resuscitation' which had been discussed ad nauseum in the family, many years before (and part of EPG etc) which was anethema to the general code of medical ethics and practice.
For the record, I spoke to my father and he was appreciative of the care given and whilst he doesn’t remember everybody, he felt that the care given was absolutely fantastic and he apologises for all the hospital care givers who had to put up with him :)
