"Felt safe and supported after a traumatic birth"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Community Midwifery Program King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I gave birth at King Edward last month, after receiving an ECV manual baby flip the day before. My baby was in ICU for a few days and we were cared for on ward 5 for around 4 nights.

My experience was complicated and traumatic but the level of care throughout my entire experience with the hospital was exceptional. In particular, the care from Laura and Mel at MGP4 was incredible, as well as all the midwives on ward 5 and the doctors Winston and Hannah (not sure about her name but she delivered my baby in theatre). I couldn't be more grateful for the exceptional care from all the staff who I interacted with, I felt physically and emotionally safe in their competent hands through traumatic birth and recovery. In particular, the continuous care from the incredible midwives in MGP4 was so comforting and I'm so lucky to have been placed with the group. Having the chance to get to know the midwives and see them repeatedly really helped me to feel supported and nurtured throughout my experience and was far preferable to having unknown midwives. I was able to develop a strong and trusting relationship with Laura and Mel which really helped me to feel calm and supported during birth (Mel) and totally supported and cared for prior to birth and postpartum (Laura).

The doctors Winston and Hannah (please check my records to make sure I have the correct name) were incredible and made me feel like I was in trusted competent hands during a very difficult time. Their manner made me feel validated and supported through my trauma and having them come visit me on the ward postpartum really helped my recovery. I felt they were honest and sensitive whilst being clear and precise.

All of the midwives on ward 5 were amazing and I'm so grateful to all of them. I can't remember all their names but those I do are Grace, Kerry, Amanda. I felt they all provided incredible supportive care with a perfectly sensitive and supportive manner that was exactly what I needed at the time.

There were many more staff who I interacted with who also deserve praise too. Based on my experience, this was an incredible service that we are fortunate to have for free in Perth. Thank you so much to everyone involved in my care!!!
