"Bmx accident"

About: Northam Health Service / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My partner had an accident with their Bmx and damaged their foot, they came home and rested for a couple of hours and then decided to go to the Northam hospital as their pain was at a 9!

A member of staff took all my partner's details then I believe they told my partner it’s most likely broken but they had no one here to X-ray until tomorrow. My partner's question was what happens if a little girl came in and needed an X-ray, I recall the staff member replied that they have people on call but this isn’t a serious emergency and to come back tomorrow morning.

Now this is the second experience we have had this year- first was our newborn being rejected which I have already come to this page and told my story. Now for this to be seemingly another turned away patient in my own family is beyond me, I need to take this further but I’m not sure where I start. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Dear giraffede45,

Thank you for providing me feedback concerning you and your partners recent experience with Northam Hospital Emergency Department, (ED).

I was sorry to read of your account and apologise for any inconvenience caused. I can advise that if a patient presents after hours, a physical examination of the patients condition will be undertaken by the ED doctor which determines what investigations and management plan is required. If the ED doctor deems the condition as urgent they will call in the on-call medical technologist to perform emergency imaging. If an x-ray is determined as not urgent, then patients generally will either be kept in the ED until normal Medical Imaging services resume or return to the hospital (if appropriate) as a booked examination.

I note your comment concerning a similar previous episode and wanting to take the matter further. Your feedback is very important to us. I would be pleased if you could contact me Mr Trenton Greive, Operations Manager Western Wheatbelt on 9690 1315 and I also would be happy to meet with you.

I hope your partner is recovering well from his injury.

Best wishes

Trenton
