"Pregnancy care after having Covid-19"

About: Swan Hill District Hospital / Midwifery Department Swan Hill District Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

I became positive with Covid 19, I was almost 20 weeks pregnant and due to have my 20 week scan which was cancelled and rescheduled. I completely understood that. I did my 14 days isolation and my young child came back positive on my day 13. So, again, we were stuck isolating for another 14 days.

I was out of isolation but had no one to care for my child. I had pushed all my appointments off and thought I had to again. Lucky enough, my parent watched my child so I could go to my ultrasound at 22 weeks. I found radiology were really good. They did play it extra safe and changed my appointment to the end of the day for extra cleaning, just to be safe, but still gave me quality care and treated me normal.

Earlier that morning, I had a phone call from midwifery. I think the nurse was being very careful with what they were saying and I believe I could tell that they felt very uneasy. I recall asking what's wrong and if I'm not allowed to come to my appointment? And then, I recall, they went and told me that the clinician had emailed and said they didn't want me to attend my appointment and, even after my child was out of their 14 days, the clinician wasn't sure if I would be allowed to go there. As I understand it, the clinician said it's not that important that I go there at the moment because I'm only early in my pregnancy and I will still be shredding the disease.

Mind you, I have a letter from dhs to say I'm safe to leave isolation and my child will be too in a few days. This made me so angry and upset, the fact that I feel I'm being treated different like I have a disease when I have the all clear.

Having Covid-19, isolating, losing income and struggling for 28 days has really affected my mental health so this is the last thing I need- to be treated like this and refused health care. I didn't even know if having Covid-19 had affected my baby at all and I just wanted reassurance

In the coming months, I believe this will happen more and more. In my opinion, if they do not want people to go into the midwifery, they should set a room up in the hospital for people to attend their appointment.

Hello 00000,

Thankyou for sharing your story with us and relaying this experience. I can only imagine the challenges that you and your family had faced over the past few weeks of extended isolation from COVID.

I was disappointed to read of your experience with the cancellation of you booked appointment resulting in undue grief to you due to the clinician's perceived COVID risk in the maternity unit. I agree with you that such an appointment could have been held in a consulting room outside of the Maternity unit. I will ask Dr Rex Prabhu, SHDH Director of Medical Services to discuss this matter with you further and to work with the Maternity team to strongly consider this option.

Your positive experience with our Radiology service when, coming in for your 22 week ultrasound is a great example of how our services should adapt to the needs of people who have experienced or may be exposed to COVID.

Again thankyou for your feedback. SHDH will learn from your experience and ensure that we continue to provide the care expected of us whilst appropriately managing the pandemic response to COVID in the community.

Regards,

Peter
