"Royal Perth Hospital 2K"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Adult Mental Health Ward 2K

(as a relative),

My partner was admitted to Royal Perth Hospital in 2K ward for mental health concerns.

Although staff were mostly kind and helpful, I found the facility itself is rather depressing, old and not clean.

As a place to facilitate mental health recovery I believe they really have no focus on physical activity. And if you look around, It seems to me the place has not been updated, the roof is not even clean with heavy dust on the vents and the kitchen floor looked like it hadn’t been cleaned properly in a long time, the breeze way from the kitchen to another part of the hospital, although locked, was littered with rubbish and neglected, giving a very grim vibe.

I know funding is limited, but I think a more colourful and modern environment would better accommodate recovery, I feel this ward encourages depression, on appearance alone, not recovery.

I recall the visiting hours seemed a constant source of confusion with every staff member telling a different thing each day, 4-8, 4-6, 5-8, and updates from medical staff as promised lacked- phone calls not made and very much kept in the dark on progress.

In general, I think this reflects the strain on mental health services and funding limitations.

Dear coordinationmw83,

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion, it is invaluable to hear about areas we need to improve on and those areas that we are doing well in.

I am pleased to hear you found the staff helpful and kind. This will be relayed to them as staff take pride in their work and are always delighted to receive this type of feedback.

I was; however, saddened to hear of your first impressions of the surroundings in Ward 2K and that you found them to be depressing when visiting your partner. I wholeheartedly agree that it is important to have a holistic space that is an inclusive and welcoming environment. The Royal Perth Bentley Group (RPBG) Mental Health (MH) Division are aware that this needs updating and are currently in the planning stages for a way forward, which would include contemporary furnishings and design improvements including an upgraded garden space.

Ward 2K holds a variety of activity programs, incorporating aspects of yoga and meditation and I am delighted to say that a recent increase in funding means that this will become available seven days a week.

I am also pleased to advise there is currently work underway for the construction of a new Mental Health Unit (MHU), which will complement the existing Mental Health Emergency Centre and Ward 2K. This facility will have dedicated exercise and social areas enabling contemporary care practices to support consumer recovery and rehabilitation.

I am very sorry there was confusion around visiting times on the ward. While visiting times have changed in line with COVID-19 restrictions, signage will be reviewed to ensure clear visibility for all visitors and staff. Your concerns regarding the cleanliness and rubbish being littered have been escalated to the relevant managers, who will review the cleaning arrangements.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The RPBG always strives to provide excellence in healthcare for our patients and the community and I am sorry that this was not your experience with our service.

Kind regards

Dr Lesley Bennett
