"Hands off approach to child's care"

About: Perth Children's Hospital / Emergency Department Perth Children's Hospital / Ward 3C - Surgical Short Stay Same Day Pre OP Same Day Post Op Recovery/PACU

(as a parent/guardian),

My teenage child was recently in Perth Children's Hospital with suspected appendicitis. I felt the care received in emergency dept was very good. However, we were then sent to the short stay ward overnight while a decision was made as to whether surgery was required or not. Eventually, I recall the diagnosis was declared as gastro as my child developed persistent diarrhoea.

While I was staying with my child, I felt the nursing staff had a very 'hands off' approach to caring for them. I believe my child was told to collect their own faeces sample (which they did, without gloves or mask), was not monitored during the night (no observations done) and I basically felt like I was on my own caring for my ill child. When other nursing staff came on, it seemed to me they were shocked to hear that my child had not had any observations done overnight.

I recall the ward only had about 3 patients in it and as I understand it, the nursing staff just shut our door and left us to it overnight while my child had diarrhoea every 20 minutes. I felt it was up to me to keep my child hydrated with water. I believe at no time were they offered IV fluids or did anyone check for signs of dehydration.

I am very disappointed with this care and believe that my child could have been at great risk of dehydration if they were younger and I was not an observant and informed parent of the dangers of such violent gastro, in my opinion. I would like to know that this does not happen to another family and that nursing staff are more 'hands on' rather than leaving the care up to parents, as I believe had happened.

Dear irregularityfc64,

Thank you for contacting us through Care Opinion and raising concern with the treatment you and your child received at Perth Children’s Hospital during your child's recent admission.

I completely understand the stress and concern a parent experiences whilst their child is ill, and I am very sorry to hear that you were left feeling helpless at this time.

In order for my team to fully investigate your concerns, we will require some more information from you regarding your child’s identity. It would be most helpful if you could contact our Consumer Engagement team by calling (08) 6456 0032 between 8.30am – 4.30pm Monday to Friday or email CAHSFeedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Regards,

Carrie Dunbar
