"Exceptional care from staff"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My elderly relative recently attended the Emergency Department at the Sydney Eye Hospital with a worsening infection in their eye despite antibiotics prescribed by a GP. We felt it best to take them to a Specialist Eye Hospital as we were very concerned that with the continuing deterioration it may affect their eyesight.

We were seen within a short time frame and triaged by who I believe was the caring and competent nurse manager of the ED, Nurse Danni. The Nurse Consultant Bernie, then looked after my relative and displayed exceptional knowledge in the care of eyes quickly diagnosing a corneal abrasion which she explained had occurred from the infection. She informed us that this condition was exceptionally painful and promptly administered a number of anaesthetic eye drops to take away the pain. After performing a series of tests and observations she referred my relative to the care of the Ophthalmology Consultant, Doctor Nathan.

Doctor Nathan and his registrar Doctor Leanne attended to my relative and performed a number of tests. He diagnosed a viral infection of the eye and prescribed a course of antiviral medication as well as some drops to prevent secondary infection and pain relief. I believe Dr Nathan was exceptional in his care and his display of kindness, concern and empathy for my relative. It was obvious to me that he had extensive experience and knowledge in ophthalmology and he was professional, caring and extremely supportive of his patient. My relative and my family felt very reassured by Dr Nathan’s treatment and bedside manner.

We are scheduled to take my relative back to the Outpatient Department at Sydney Eye Hospital to be seen again by Dr Nathan as I recall he insisted on the follow through of his diagnosis and treatment.

We wish to personally thank the wonderful, caring and professional ED nurses at the Sydney Eye Hospital and in particular Nurse Danni and Nurse Bernie who were so caring and compassionate toward my relative.

Acknowledgment and a major personal thank you to Dr Nathan, I believe whose expert knowledge and skill in ophthalmology medicine was greatly appreciated by my relative and family.

With sincere gratitude for the exceptional care provided at Sydney Eye Hospital ED.
