"Child broke their arm"

About: Karratha Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Our child broke their wrist and we live about 2 hours from Karratha. My child slipped over and broke their wrist, we took them to the medical centre in town and they told us to head to the hospital.

We arrived in Karratha around 2 hours later to be told that as I understand it, they don’t do X-rays over the weekends and sent us on our way, I believe, knowing we live 2 hours away and I recall there was no offer of strong pain killers and I felt it took us asking if my child can have any pain relief while we wait in Karratha as the shops were closed and I knew we couldn’t get anything until they opened.

My child spent the time in excruciating pain until we could be seen, and I believe it was clear to the eye that their wrist was broken. I understand X-rays couldn’t be done, but to be let go with no pain relief I believe wasn’t called for. I felt to be left with that kind of pain was unacceptable.

In my opinion, the clinician that also saw my child had a very rude bedside manner and wasn’t gentle with their arm at all, I witnessed twisting and pulling it after I recall my child told the clinician multiple times that it hurt and to stop. The clinician didn’t seem to care at all and they seemed like they just wanted to go home, I remember them holding their keys in their hand and asking what we want them to do. I felt the clinician was very unprofessional.

Overall, we weren’t very impressed with the care given towards our child or our voice not being heard and to be seemingly told to go on our way, I believe knowing we live 2 hours away and our child to be left in excruciating pain and them knowing we aren’t close to any hospital.

Dear heronef86,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience here at Karratha Health Campus and I am very concerned to hear that your child has a broken wrist. It is distressing to hear that no pain relief was offered for this injury and also the concerning behaviour described for the clinician. Please accept my apologies as this does not epitomise our WACHS core values of community, compassion, curosity, quality and integrity that we strive to achieve.

I would like to better understand the patient journey for your child with Dr Michael Langford one of our senior Doctors here. I would greatly appreciate you making contact with me so we can commence an investigation and review your child's episode of care to better comprehend what has transpired.

Looking forward to speaking with you and thank you again for providing this feedback, my name is Liam Avery and I am the A/Operations Manager of WACHS West Pilbara. Please contact me via email on Liam.Avery@health.wa.gov.au or call me on 9144 7639.

Sincerely,

Liam Avery
