I was 9 weeks pregnant when I attended Box Hill Emergency after noticing some bleeding. This was my second pregnancy- my first one ended in a missed miscarriage earlier in the year.
When I saw a doctor, I was asked the usual screening questions (medical history, nature of bleeding, recent activities etc). I explained that I was feeling very anxious due to my previous missed miscarriage and recall I asked repeatedly for an ultrasound. The doctor, I felt, was not empathetic at all to my stress and came across quite impatient. In fact, there was a final year student present and I felt that they showed more empathy. The ultrasound was refused and instead the doctor took some blood to test Hcg levels.
As I understand it, the blood test showed my Hcg levels corresponded to 9 weeks pregnancy and I felt the doctor sent me off on my way as soon as possible. I had to arrange my own ultrasound to realise that I in fact had another missed miscarriage before the 9 weeks.
Not only did it seem to me the doctor failed to pick this up, but I believe they gave me a completely different result. This just proves to me that I can't trust health professionals too much. At the end of the day I felt like I was just a number in the system to be dealt with asap, not a stressed-out, anxious human being that just wants a definitive answer to a question.
