"Miscarriage"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was 9 weeks pregnant when I attended Box Hill Emergency after noticing some bleeding. This was my second pregnancy- my first one ended in a missed miscarriage earlier in the year.

When I saw a doctor, I was asked the usual screening questions (medical history, nature of bleeding, recent activities etc). I explained that I was feeling very anxious due to my previous missed miscarriage and recall I asked repeatedly for an ultrasound. The doctor, I felt, was not empathetic at all to my stress and came across quite impatient. In fact, there was a final year student present and I felt that they showed more empathy. The ultrasound was refused and instead the doctor took some blood to test Hcg levels.

As I understand it, the blood test showed my Hcg levels corresponded to 9 weeks pregnancy and I felt the doctor sent me off on my way as soon as possible. I had to arrange my own ultrasound to realise that I in fact had another missed miscarriage before the 9 weeks.

Not only did it seem to me the doctor failed to pick this up, but I believe they gave me a completely different result. This just proves to me that I can't trust health professionals too much. At the end of the day I felt like I was just a number in the system to be dealt with asap, not a stressed-out, anxious human being that just wants a definitive answer to a question.

Dear oscarks33,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience when attending the Emergency Department at Eastern Health’s Box Hill Hospital. I’m sorry firstly for your loss and also that your experience made you feel ‘like a number in the system’ and not with the empathy you hoping for.

I would like to invite you to contact one of our Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience either by calling 1800 EASTERN or by emailing feedback@easternhealth.org.au. so we can review your specific experience. If you choose to call please be aware that it is possible that the Patient Relations Advisors may be on another call at the time you ring and if so you will be invited to leave a message so they can return your call.

I hope we hear from you soon.

Kind regards

David
