About: Busselton Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I felt I was disowned by a seemingly grumpy nurse 1 (GN1) for putting other patients at risk with Covid because I was from Perth. I recall the nurse asked why I was here, I said we're from Perth on holiday and I believe they replied oh I shouldn't be here, I don't belong here, I should be back up there. I told them in a calm manner that I was and I just had to wear my mask, it seemed to me the nurse proceeded to go and ask their colleague about that and came back with a different tone and said that I just need to wear my mask indoors and I replied yeup, I know, I did try to tell them that and I recall they said that no I didn't! And slammed my curtain and walked away (same nurse as above).

On the first night, after being settled from extreme pain, I messaged my spouse to let them know I was okay, I recall GN1 said something along the lines of put my God damn phone away, they gave me that good medication to put me to sleep, I was just using the system being on my phone, I don't need to be here then, put it away.

I believe GN2 was very rude to my spouse, my spouse adjusted my bed settings to raise the knees for elevation and I recall the nurse said the words leave the bloody thing alone and just go home because we're not meant to be here for god sakes (As I understand it, the Dr actually requested my spouse stay the night to keep me calm and give them information regarding my operation in Perth)

GN2 just had a bad attitude in my opinion, they asked my spouse to go home and was grabbing our things and asked me if I wanted the wheelchair and crutches and I recall the nurse yelled at them (at bloody midnight, I remember) no, they don't need them, they have their own equipment here, just take it all and leave.

I was whincing a bit and I believe GN1 storms into my cubicle and says am I in pain? Right love, I need to ring the bell to tell them, otherwise they can't help me when the pain is already here (that second day was horrible, it seemed to me they'd given me so many narcotics, I had a panic attack in reaction to the drugs so I didn't want to ask for more) I responded yeah I am in a lot of pain, sorry, I just thought I wouldn't be allowed anymore, so I recall the nurse sighs and gets me some. I'm still crying and in pain about half an hour later, I ring the bell (as I believe was requested) the nurse seemingly storms in and goes look, I am making a lot of blue and waking everyone up, they can't give me any more drugs, I've had so many narcotics today it's not funny, I just have to live with it. So I lay there, holding my leg crying for about 2 hours as my leg was just burning, before falling asleep.

As I'm crying, I recall I hear the nurse say to the other nurses gosh that patient (and they said my bed number), they’re making so much noise, they won't stop bloody crying, they’re making such a big deal about it, so I try and cry quieter.

At handover in the morning, after my first night, I recall GN1 goes the patient in (my bed number), I caught them on their phone last night abusing the drugs, and I told them to put it away.

My spouse and I asked to get some ice, we rung the bell and GN2 comes in and just looks at us, I say may we please grab some ice and I recall GN1 says look, they’re looking after the whole ward by themselves, they’ll do it when I get some time but I'll have to wait and my spouse goes geeze, we were just asking for some, we're happy to wait and the nurse storms out and GN2 brings it to us and I recall throws it towards my spouse.

The second morning GN1 comes to give me my meds and I was asleep, they wake me up and my mask had fallen down during the night, they give me one and I recall says I need to be changing these regularly, they need changing, I am putting everyone at risk otherwise and they shove a new mask at me, so I said yesterday I believe they told me I didn't belong here and seemingly refused to see me, I thought I didn't belong here and the nurse stormed out straight away and says no no they’re not doing this, they didn't say that, no.

My spouse came in early Christmas morning and rung from outside to ask and GN2 asked GN1 if my spouse could and they said yeah as long as my spouse keeps the noise down and doesn't wake anyone, so GN2 goes to the door and my spouse said they felt the nurse sprayed them so hard and their body language and tone was awful and they said something similar to if they make any noise or wake anyone up they will kick them out straight away, do not make any noise.

It seemed to me there was the same thing towards other patients, a patient asked for their phone charger and GN1 goes mate they don't carry a charger for every phone around, they don't have one. The patient was asking the nurse to put theirs in, I believe the nurse just whinged straight away before letting them speak and then goes, look they'll have to wait, they've got a lot to do.

Every time I asked to be taken to the toilet, I felt I got snide remarks. When I first came in, their ability to calm me down was awful, I recall something along the lines of just stop breathing so fast, I need to slow down, I’m not doing myself any favours, stop crying, in what I believe was a rude tone. My leg was so swollen I could barely see my toes and I thought the pressure would cause my leg to explode. I was in a lot of pain, I believe they had a terrible way of communicating with patients. In my opinion, they set a negative tone straight away.

Dear cepheushg97,

I am so disappointed and dismayed to hear about your recent experience at Busselton Health Campus.

Your description of the behaviour of staff is unacceptable and certainly does not reflect the WACHS values that we expect all of our staff to uphold, including the importance of being compassionate with our patients and their families and carers

I would like to sincerely apologise for what happened and I would appreciate learning more about what took place so I can investigate fully. Please feel free to call me on 9753 6061 at a time that is convenient for you.

I hope that you are feeling better and that I hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely
