"Lack of podiatry service"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Allied Health

(as other),

I’ve been having problems with my feet following a broken leg a while ago. Since then it’s been difficult for me to bend down and trim my toe nails. I had previously had this taken care of at the Geraldton Health Campus but it seems there is no longer a podiatrist there. I was asked to call my doctor to get an appointment. My dr referred me to a podiatrist who trimmed my nails, but did not seem to undertake a full foot examination and then charged me $65 which I felt was a lot for a very quick appointment that to me wasn’t thorough and I hadn’t expected to pay.

With an increase in the heat my feet are becoming sore underneath again and I looked and saw my nails were over growing again. I checked the My Aged Care but was unable to find a service. I didn’t want to go back to my dr to be referred to a podiatrist again. I was walking past following a dental appointment and saw a nail clinic, I asked them if they did feet. They trimmed my nails, cleaned my feet and checked them over for cracks and made me feel very comfortable. All for $45 which I feel was an excellent service. It’s a shame no one knows about it.

Dear asteropesz67,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion. I’m sorry to hear about the ongoing foot problems you’ve had since breaking your leg, including the difficulties you experience when bending down.

The Podiatry service available within the Geraldton Health Campus currently offers outpatient appointments for high-risk clients – most often this is people at risk of poor foot health because of health conditions like Diabetes or Kidney disease.

When a referral for Podiatry is received at Geraldton Health Campus, people who are at risk of poor foot health are offered an appointment based on urgency. People who have good foot health but need routine nail care are directed to a private podiatrist provider. The Podiatrist can also offer advice on Medicare Chronic Disease Care Plans that partially cover the costs for anyone who has a chronic disease.

It was great to read of the excellent service from the nail clinic you found, and we really appreciate you sharing your story on Care Opinion. Receiving feedback from consumers helps us continually seek ways to improve our service delivery to the community.

We sincerely hope that your leg is healing well, and that you can resume your normal activities as soon as possible.

Best regards,

Derek Fraser
