"Waiting for hours"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

As a larger family with 2 little kids, I feel every time when we come to emergency be it for children or adults, we always have to wait about 5-6 hours before we can get treatment.

Once my child came in around 9 pm and I believe was checked by a doctor around 4 am. By that time, my child was asleep and couldn’t be treated by the doctor as they were not responding to the doctor’s answers.

In my opinion, this is unacceptable that you have to wait hours at an emergency to be treated.

Dear Travel,

Emergency Departments in public hospitals provide emergency care to anyone who needs immediate treatment for a serious injury or illness.

I am sorry to hear of the wait times you have experienced - five hours is certainly longer than we would like. However the Fiona Stanley Hospital Emergency Department is the busiest in WA, consistently attending to more than 350 presentations per day, plus extra pressures related to COVID19.

Our staff aim to provide safe, quality care to all patients, and must prioritise patients based on clinical need. To lessen wait times in future, you might like to visit the Healthy WA website for some suggestions of other health care options.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
