"Eye care I care"

About: Specialists in the Solomon Electoral District

(as the patient),

Got metal filing in my eye on Christmas day after buying myself a remote control motor for my roller door and tried to self-install, didn't really feel that bad but eye weeped during night and obviously was not happy.

Next few days continued to close over. I lay in bed and kept surroundings dark after purchasing some eye drops at chemist. I could not go outside as sunshine brightness would be too over bearing to handle, laying in bed with eye on pillow and held shut was solution. Approximately 10 days later, I created the courage to find some assistance,

Contacting Shaun from Deadly Enterprises is Australia’s first Aboriginal-owned optical provider, he sent contact detail of optometrist available as I recall his practice was not open. I called them and they said if you can get here in 30minutes you will be seen.

I arrived at optometrist and submitted info. I was then called into theatre, advised optometrist of situation and they inquired to when it took place and I said Christmas day. I recall the optometrist responded with I was stupid for leaving it for so long and I agreed and said I’m scared as well. Where was I to receive treatment on Christmas day? The optometrist seemed to instantly reply the hospital, to which I repeated I’m scared.

Upon leaving optometrist, I sent Shaun a message thanking him, message informed him eye was significantly scratched yet foreign object absent. Medication required was an antibiotic based eye drop.

He replied back and informed me of available eye testing appointments and the importance of prescription glasses at my age compared to service station glasses and text back selection of dates and times.

I visited him the next day.

Point of the story is how he, as a health care professional, made me feel. Not only did he know where I would get good treatment, he followed through. Ensuring I get good eye care, during which his communication via text message ended with ‘brother’.

In my opinion, this is the difference between a person within the health care sector who generally cares and one who seems to only do their job.

"The fabric of character instantly detected by a patient"

Other important factor I believe was proven by my actions, was the underlying fear of admitting to local hospital.
