"Care of my grandchild after they were assaulted"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My grandchild told me of an incident that happened recently.

My young adult grandchild and their friend were walking at a park when they were assaulted and my grandchild was stabbed in the arm. As my grandchild was wounded, their friend called their parent who drove them to the hospital for treatment. My grandchild called their parent to let them know they were in hospital, but my grandchild’s phone battery died.

After waiting for around 4 hours to be seen and receive stitches, in the middle of the night my grandchild wanted to call their parent to pick them up, so I believe they requested if they could borrow a charger to charge their phone/check the number; I recall initially a staff member told them yes they could borrow one, then I believe they were told no, when my grandchild seemed to overhear a staff member commenting: oh, they are asking for a charger now, they may ask for a lift home in the minute, then my grandchild overheard staff laughing at the comment. I believe my grandchild was then asked to leave the hospital or security would be called. My grandchild was unable to contact their parent to pick them up at that time as they had no phone battery. It seemed to me no one in the hospital made an attempt to contact their parent/NOK or charge their phone, for the price of a phone call, it took my grandchild 2 hours to walk home, after receiving treatment for a stab wound, I believe likely unaware of their directions to get home, likely in shock, frightened and I believe being mocked by health professionals. I feel no one cared.

My grandchild is a very responsible, well-mannered and a shy young person in my opinion, and tells me they kept this incident from me because they didn't want me to worry...they said they don't care anymore about the assault, but they felt pretty humiliated by the health professionals who looked after them that day; my grandchild felt they laughed at them....

As a grandparent, I am horrified and shocked to hear this story and their experience in the health care system.

I feel there’s no more empathy.

Dear baba99,

Thank you for your feedback. Your grandchild's experience while in the Emergency Department (ED) of Joondalup Health Campus (JHC) is disappointing. To hear that your grandchild has sustained an injury following an assault in a park must have been distressing for you and the extended family and I hope your grandchild is recovering from the injury.

Without speaking to staff, I am not able to comment on why the ED staff indicated that they would provide a phone charger and then say that this was not possible, as the hospital does not provide JHC mobile phones for use in clinical areas. We do have several facilities available for patients to communicate with families and we will investigate to see if any were offered in this instance.

The comments that your grandchild has relayed to you from our staff go against the Ramsay Way and we would like to investigate this further. The hospital would of course need your grandchild's consent to do this.

We encourage yourself or your grandchild to contact the Consumer Liaison Team at JHC on 08 9400 9672 or ConsumerLiaison.JHC@ramsayhealth.com.au as we would like to obtain further details. Once we have completed our investigation, we would be happy to provide our feedback. You can discuss how you would like to receive this feedback, when you contact our consumer liaison office.

Thank you again for taking the trouble to contact us through Care Opinion.

Yours sincerely

Paul Taylor-Byrne

Acting Deputy Director of Clinical Services

Joondalup Health Campus
