"Maintained my dignity"

About: Northam Health Service / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Upon attendance at Northam ED the initial consult was with the Triage Nurse Elizabeth. Nurse Elizabeth was very compassionate, efficient and understanding. Respected my privacy when obtaining details so others could not hear.

Went into ER Bay, then greeted by Nurse Megan who advised I had to put gown on. Respected my privacy whilst undressing. She did obs and connected me to ECG. Although I felt I was tying up invaluable hospital time & resources as it seemed minor, she reassured me never to think that because I wasn't. She did the obs, even blood sugar levels stating they were in healthy range and the Dr will attend soon.

Almost then immediately met Dr Gavin, who introduced himself.

Nurse Megan liaised with Dr Gavin.

I rarely meet Doctors like him. Gentle natured, efficient, compassionate and professional which the standard was one of the highest calibres I’ve encountered. Even when he was taking blood, (which is normally difficult due to my veins) he did it with such ease, whilst reassuring me.

The Dr and nurse worked beautifully together as a team, always advising on what they were doing.

Dr let me know ECG looked good no concerns, listened to chest, no concerns, good. Once bloods taken, he let me know we just wait for those results, which did not take long and I was clear to go home. Even the pathology was done with efficiency

Advised results of bloods indicated no heart concerns and results will be sent to GP.

Both expressed if any concerns or aggravation return to hospital.

Throughout all this I was asked about family medical history which is not often asked from previous experiences at differing hospitals. I was treated with respect all whilst dignity maintained as I had to take shirt and bra of and place gown on. Nurse Megan, was mindful of shame I may feel and maintained my dignity by helping. Even when discharging, she once again maintained my dignity.

All their attitudes were positive and reassuring which lifted my spirits and reduced my anxiety.

Compliments to Northam Hospital Emergency Departments to those who engaged and treated me, even the quick return of blood result.

So special thankyou to:

Triage Nurse Elizabeth

Nurse Megan

Dr Gavin

It would be nice that their outstanding efforts, patient care and treatment are acknowledged as I believe they are always very busy and during my visit, just as busy.

Excellence all throughout.
