My parent went to the Geraldton Regional Hospital after being unwell for over a week, they had constipation, vomiting, swollen eardrums, a temp and was in a severe amount of pain due to not being able to take their prescribed pain medication they need for nerve damage (kept vomiting them up)
After a long wait, they received an IV for their dehydration. However, my parent was woken around 2am and told they were being discharged because they were clearly just going through drug withdrawals. If my parent was going through any drug withdrawals it was their prescribed medication, but I felt the staff did not seem to care about that or any of their other symptoms or took the time to check. I believe they decided my parent was a drug user and they were not going to help any further.
I recall my parent did not have their phone or wallet and was told they needed to leave the hospital immediately. When my parent asked if their spouse had been called, I believe they said yes but they are not coming to get you so they called a taxi. I have since checked my other parent’s mobile and no such phone call ever happened (not even a missed call).
I believe my parent, who also suffers from severe asthma, was left sitting in the hospital carpark in the freezing cold, sick and vomiting waiting for a taxi for over 2 hours. I recall they managed to get home around 4 am once the taxi finally got to them.
Since this happened, my parent is still very sick but I cannot get them to go back to the hospital as they feel embarrassed, judged and looked down on.
In my opinion, the hospital has a duty of care towards their patient’s health and safety and I feel this has not happened and I am very disappointed with the Geraldton Hospital for the apparent lack of care and compassion towards another human being.
