"Dying relative"

About: Royal Adelaide Hospital Royal Adelaide Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Hi, my mum was recently transported to the RAH emergency department.

She had a fall at home and activated her medic alarm. The ambulance response was quick and very professional, when I arrived at her house she was in a bad way as she suffered from emphysema and other chronic health issues.

My mum was examined at the Emergency Department and as no visitors were allowed at the time. I gave the doctors a full rundown of their issues and answered their questions as best as I could, I received a number of calls throughout the night with an update on her condition from 3 doctors. When it became obvious that mum was not responding to treatment, my siblings were advised to attend.

On arrival at the RAH the professionalism of all staff who I dealt with, from the front office through to the nurses and doctors was outstanding.

The nurses initially, in emergency caring for mum, need particular expression of gratitude for the way they responded to the needs of her. What ever happened was no trouble or issue to them, with one nurse named Georgia going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure our mum and ourselves were looked after.

Mum was transferred to 8E in the early hours one morning and I can once again state the care of the nurses on the ward was exceptional and caring.

My family appreciated the frankness and compassion of the 2 consulting doctors in 8E, with a honest appraisal of her condition and a care plan for her final hours with all of her family members agreeing with that action.

Finally, the 2 on duty doctors that certified mum had passed away also showed compassion and empathy.

In conclusion the medical staff at the RAH were nothing short of brilliant in a very emotional time for the family and resulted in our mum receiving a dignified and pain free passing.

On behalf of my family, I would like to say a very big thank-you and appreciation of your professionalism and compassion in a very stressful time.
