About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Neonatology

(as a parent/guardian),

My child was born recently in King Edward Memorial Hospital. Due to covid restrictions I have been limited to visits twice a day for two hours.

I think this is a violation of basic human rights to keep a parent away from their child as well as increasing the caring load on my spouse.

I am triple vaccinated, I feel I have done everything correctly. Let me see my child!

Dear septembersy58,

Congratulations on the birth of your new baby. I appreciate the time you have taken to raise your concerns regarding the recent changes to visiting arrangements at the Neonatology Unit at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH).

The COVID-19 Public Hospital Guidelines on hospital access and restrictions were issued by the WA Department of Health to minimise the spread of COVID-19 and protect our most vulnerable patients, including neonates requiring intensive care. The Guidelines are in keeping with visitor restrictions applied in Neonatal Intensive Care Units across the country in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and are based on best evidence and advice from Infectious Disease and Infection Prevention and Control experts.

I understand that having a baby in the NICU can be stressful and that the changes to the visiting arrangements will be further impacting on you and your partner. Please talk to the NICU staff about the opportunities that are available to connect remotely with your baby outside of visiting hours using our online video system, FamCam. We do recognise that each family has their own unique circumstances, so speak to your treating team if you have any questions or concerns.
