"Dental cyst"

About: Derby Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I woke up very ill from a toothache the night before, going to the bathroom I noticed a huge golf ball size lump on the bottom of my jaw. Freaking out, crook as feeling, so much pain and throbbing over my right side of my face.

I rushed to ED, got triaged and told them I'm in so much pain and I felt like I wanted to throw up. My face was throbbing, the clinician gave me Panadol and Nurofen and told me to wait. It seemed to me two other people came in after me and went in first, so I got up and asked how much longer, being there now for an hour or so. I recall the clinician said they were short staffed that day and I said I am feeling more sick, the Panadol and Nurofen have not done anything. Did not offer me anything else no water, no painkillers, not a vomit bucket, nothing but I was waiting for about two hours before I got that angry and told them loudly how sick I was and I know what goes on cause I work in healthcare too.

So waiting in Emergency for about two hours, the clinician brought me in and then seemed to lecture me about priority and triage scores and stuff, when I felt like I am a priority and am very ill or would not be there with apparent poison going through my system. So I told them do not lecture me. I recall they said so what, because I work in healthcare I think I get priority and I said no, I know how it works, so are they going to keep talking to me like I’m stupid or treat me. I recall they said I can leave and come back to be seen by another clinician or I can calm down. They seemed more interested in telling me how to act than treat me. So I left sick and throbbing and crying and upset to be treated like my health and wellbeing does not matter.

I rang back later and made an appointment and the doctor said that was so bad and was a priority cause I had a huge dental cyst and my three teeth were all infected. Gave me antibiotics and painkillers. I believe the ED clinician was just a locum and was very rude and not nice at all. Being treated like that I felt was disgusting in a small town with only one hospital.

Hi robinns69,

Thank you for sharing your personal experience about your recent visit to Derby Hospital’s Emergency Department. I understand from your story that you were experiencing pain, frustration and anger while waiting to be seen for an aching tooth.

Having had the opportunity to speak to you personally since this visit, I would like to reassure you again that we expect our ED staff to treat all of our patients with compassion and empathy. I am sorry that this was not your experience.

Please be assured that I have reviewed the Emergency Department (ED) staffing and triage wait times in relation to your visit and I am aware that patients were being seen according to ED triage prioritisation guidelines. Sometimes it is not obvious why one patient is called before another patient. This relies on senior nursing expertise in assessment of clinical conditions and clinical risk. Nevertheless, I can imagine that your experience of a clinician becoming defensive about waiting times and triage scores might have made you feel more frustrated. This is important feedback for all of our staff to reflect upon. This kind of interaction is unnecessary and unhelpful when what was required was a kind and prompt approach to managing your pain.

This feedback will be provided to all of our ED staff as an opportunity to reflect on communication in these situations.

I am happy for you to contact me anytime to further discuss your experience on 0419 043 610.

Yours sincerely

Nick Mildenhall

Operations Manager
