About: Swan Hill District Hospital

(as the patient),

1) I am vegetarian.

2) I eat pasta, rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, bread.

3) Salads I eat have potatoes, rice or something solid. With the solids, something which stays in your stomach longer than 2 (two) hours.

4) Food I am given in this hospital is a liquid (e.g. jelly, custard etc)

The length between tea at night and breakfast are too far apart in my opinion. I believe there’s no variety in what a diabetic and a vegetarian is offered. When I ordered my meal at breakfast, by the time the meals come later, it seemed to me the order had been changed to something I didn't ask for.

Dear aquariuspt54,

Thank you very much for taking the time to explain your food situation while in our hospital. There are a number of issues that you raise here that need some investigation, and I wonder if you could send me some more detail via email (ckeogh@shdh.org.au), or phone me (50339250) to discuss your particular situation in more detail.

I know there is a long time between evening meal and breakfast, however I also know that is why supper is offered later in the evening. I would be very keen to hear from you about what was offered in supper to help you get through the night without having hunger cramps. All the meals and snacks are very carefully designed with health and calories to be balanced and appropriate for health and recovery in hospital. This means they are slightly different to home cooked meals, where your meals are balancing what energy you use for daily life.

There are a couple of matters you raise about your choices- and what vegetarian option there were, and also that it appears your choices didn't arrive- these are matters that we are following up, and will provide more information about.

I know the team in the kitchen, the dieticians and all people in food preparation are preparing response for you. From a nursing perspective, we are very keen for patients to have healthy nutrition while they are inpatients as it aids their healing and recovery. I look forward to hearing from you and getting your input into a solution to the issue you have raised.

Kind Regards

Chloe
