"Appointment with cardiologist"

About: Sale Hospital / Medical Service/Ward

(as a relative),

My parent had an outpatient cardiology appointment recently. On arrival they were covid screened as expected. They were asked if they were vaccinated to which they replied no. My parent was happy to wear a mask, they did not mind being asked if they were vaccinated, they would have been happy to complete a RAT test if necessary, but what my parent did get upset about was being made to wear a yellow sticker because they were not vaccinated and the rudeness of the staff member who was dealing with them. Having to wear a yellow sticker and being treated so rudely, made my parent feel very distressed and discriminated against. As a clinician working in Victoria in outpatient and specialist clinics, I understand that wearing a sticker due to being unvaccinated is not a requirement by DHHS so I would like to ask why this is being done. As a former employee of a hospital, I am extremely disappointed in how my parent was treated.

Dear browserzd97,

My name is Mandy Pusmucans and I am the Director of Nursing at Sale Hospital.

I apologise that your parent felt distressed upon their recent visit to Central Gippsland Health. This is not what we aspire to.

I also wish to thank them for working with us through the necessary screening process that has become part of our daily routine in this COVID pandemic.

To clarify the reason for the yellow sticker, it doesn't indicate vaccination status. The yellow sticker is used to identify all visitors to the Sale Hospital, including those coming to visit a loved one, or attending an outpatient appointment, regardless of vaccination status. This helps us to support that person's journey through the health service.

You indicated that your parent felt they were treated rudely and felt discriminated against. I will work with the team to improve both our approach and communication in relation to the yellow sticker.

Thank you for raising your concerns so that we can make improvements.

I trust that my response is useful to you. If you or your parent wish to talk further about this, please don't hesitate to contact me on 03-5143 8512 or by email at mandy.pusmucans@cghs.com.au.

Kind regards

Mandy
