"Excessive delay for a paediatric appointment"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Outpatient Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My teenage child who is in Year 12 this year has ADHD, and they've noticed that their medication isn’t strong enough. We tried to book in to see the paediatrician at Geraldton Hospital and they said they won’t be able to see my child until August which is ridiculous! I am infuriated by this delay and I can only imagine how my child's going to react when I tell them this news. I believe it will cause them a great deal of stress and anxiety on top of everything else. By August, they are basically getting ready to graduate.

Why can’t they fit my child in for a 5-minute consultation before that, seeing that it's just about increasing their medication which they have been taking for quite some time now.

Dear hotelqt78,

Thank you for sharing your story with us on Care Opinion.

I am sorry to hear about a delay in gaining an appointment for your child to have her ADHD medication reviewed.

The WA Country Health Service - Midwest has seen an increased demand for our paediatric outpatient services which, at times, is resulting in unavoidable delays for people wanting to access services. I would like to assure you that we are working to reduce delays at Geraldton Hospital, including establishing additional clinics so that we can continue to meet the needs of our community.

I am pleased to hear that you have made contact with the health service and that efforts are being made to expedite your child’s appointment and link with your GP to support prescription changes in the interim.

If you would like to discuss your concerns with me, I can be contacted on phone 9956 2410 or via email at Ranjit.Paul@health.wa.gov.au

Thank you again for providing feedback to us. I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Ranjit Paul

Director of Medical Services, Geraldton Hospital
