"Staff at Fremantle Hospital"

About: Fremantle Hospital and Health Service / General Surgery Department & B8S Fremantle Hospital and Health Service / Medical Imaging Fremantle Hospital and Health Service / Operating Theatres Fremantle Hospital and Health Service / Orthopaedic Surgery Department & B7N Fremantle Hospital and Health Service / Patient Support Services (PSS) - Housekeeping, Orderlies, Transport Fremantle Hospital and Health Service / Surgical Specialty

(as the patient),

I recently had a second total hip replacement at Fremantle Hospital. Once again all the staff I came in contact with were absolutely fantastic. So cheerful, obliging and extremely professional.

Clerks in the waiting room, orderlies, preparation nurses, anaesthetists and their nurses, Dr Dave (what a top bloke), theatre nurses and doctors, recovery staff and radiographers. I'm sure I've missed some. They were superlative!

I believe if our Health Minister had spent the day incognito, watching the entire process, a well-oiled machine, she would have been filled with admiration.

Transferred to Ward 8 North. Once again the staff made my stay there the very best they could. They're all so cheerful, while being very business-like at the same time. Don't know if they are instructed that way, or it's in their makeup. Even Dr Dave visited in the evening after, as I understand it, being up since 4am!

Also, I noticed some patients are quite rude to the staff. In my experience, it's like water off a duck's back, still smiling and friendly to them.

At all times I had the utmost confidence in my treatment and the lovely staff.

In my opinion, private hospitals could learn a few things. My sibling's experience at an exclusive hospital ......."Rude, up themselves and terrible service."

One last incident.

As I was preparing to leave, the lady who makes the beds, mops, cleans and serves the food dishes, said "hang on."

Came back with a wheelchair, (didn't really need It) loaded me and my bag and delivered me outside to the patient pick-up. She then walked quite a way to the Patient Equipment Centre and returned with a shower stool, then went back again and brought a heavy utility chair back! Gave me a pat on the shoulder and said "Good luck mate" How nice is that?

I write this because it's always the 'squeaky wheel' who gets the oil, and that's not fair.

I believe any idiot can find fault.....

All of those staff should be very proud of their professions and themselves.

Thank you.

Dear talonbn74,

What a delight your compliment was to read. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and well done for being so observant despite undergoing major surgery!

Incidentally, Fremantle Hospital recently celebrated it’s 125th birthday (on 22 January 2022). This was cause for a lot of reflection on the rich history of Fremantle Hospital by past and present staff, as well as acknowledging and celebrating the plans for Fremantle Hospital’s pivotal role to residents of the South Metropolitan Region going forward. A strong theme evident is the feeling of community, and the fact that staff train, work and then retire from Fremantle Hospital due to the community feel and positive culture.

We know this – but to hear of the impact this sense of community and positive work environment clearly has on our patients during their time of need, and often when they are most vulnerable, is very special. Thank you for your compliments.

I have shared your Care Opinion post with as many of the staff involved in your care as I can, with both my and the Executive Team’s added personal note of gratitude.

I hope you are recovering well and out and about enjoying your new hips!

Kind regards,

Victoria Holmes

Director of Operations and Site Management

Fremantle Hospital.
