"Lack of professionalism"

About: Geraldton Community Health Service

(as a parent/guardian),

We waited 18 months for a review with a clinician. Our gp sent a letter wondering what the hold up was. Had a different clinician ring us last week to ask what was the issue and after explaining, I recall they said they wanted to see my child asap and gave us an appt (my child has horrific night terrors - unlocks doors and bolts outside). So we saw the clinician and I felt it was the biggest waste of time! It seemed the clinician was not interested in speaking to me - instead asked my child random questions about school. They concluded with saying my child will grow out of it with maturity- they see this is in non-specific diagnosed children..... um, I questioned if they read my child’s file with an autism diagnosis. My child will just grow out of autism, will they? I was so so so angry.

We had been referred for two medical issues, it seemed neither of which the clinician wanted to discuss and they talked about random things that I felt had no relevance to why we were there. I recall we were told stomach pain was all in my child’s head and they would grow out of it. The clinician did not even check my child’s belly, ask any questions, nothing....

We have been let down again. I believe it will be another 18 months, no answers.

Dear Blessedparent

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion

I am so sorry to hear about the difficulties you and your child faced getting the help and assistance you need. I would like to sincerely apologise that you felt we had let you down.

In the Midwest we have seen increased demand for our paediatric outpatient services and delays for people wanting to access services. I would like to assure you that we are working to reduce delays at Geraldton Hospital, including establishing additional clinics so that we can continue to meet the needs of our community.

Carers and families can provide invaluable information about their children and it is very important clinicians take this into account. Our medical and nursing leads for Geraldton Hospital will reiterate this to our teams at each opportunity – such as staff meetings or handover.

I would really like to speak with you to understand fully what happened, to ensure we are providing your child and yourself with all the support and treatment possible. My name is Derek Fraser and I am Operations Manager at the Geraldton Hospital, if you are happy to contact me on 08 9956 2369 or via email - derek.fraser@health.wa.gov.au

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,

Derek Fraser
